Bass clairon-bugle – De Prins Gebr.
This bass clairon or bugle was made by the firm De Prins. History has it that around 1901, Petrus DE PRINS (1857-1926) assumed control of a brasswind workshop in Antwerp, which he developed further with his sons.
During World War I production of instruments was interrupted. Then in 1918, production restarted but under the name Gebroeders De Prins (De Prins Brothers) – his sons Karel, Gustaaf and Louis. They expanded their range to include woodwinds and percussion as well as brass. The company achieved success and even exported to other countries. Despite obvious problems in World War II, the company continued with a third generation until the eighties.
If we look at the maker’s stamp, we can see the prizes mentioned. So, this instrument was made after the “Gold Medal” award at the 1930 World Exposition in Antwerp and the “Grand Prize” at the 1935 World Exposition in Brussels.
This bass clairon-bugle is in very good condition with no dents. It has been nicely kept in a collection for many years and sounds very good indeed. It has its original stamped mouthpiece and a delightful red/white cord complete with tassels.
