Ebony flute – PRUDENT

VM Collectables is now offering this unique and rare flute by the legendary French maker PRUDENT for sale.

It is made of the darkest, sleek black ebony adorned with exquisitely carved ivory ferrules and topped with an ivory cap. The ivory at the lower end of the foot joint is actually formed to cover over the wood and looks amazing. The key is breathtakingly beautiful and the silver gleams. It is held in a block which was carved away from the ebony.

This flute features the typical wide undercuttings in the inside bore of its time – late eighteenth century.  If we now look at the embouchure, we can see that it is oval in shape and actually measures 9.0 x 10.3 mm.

This Prudent flute It is in very good condition following restoration. Cracks were repaired and restored on the foot ring and middle joint from top tenon down (around 60 mm).

The literature tells us that Prudent THIERIOT was born in 1730 in Bourbonne-Les-Bains, France and died in Paris in 1786. He used the mononym or the just one name PRUDENT.  He was the son of a carpenter who set off as a young man to find fame and fortune in the city of Paris. He apprenticed to the master woodwind-maker Charles Joseph BIZEY (ca. 1695-1758) in rue de Dauphine. Through marriage he inherited Bizey’s workshop after his death. He was a prolific maker who was famous not only for his flutes, but also baroque and pre-classical clarinets as well as bassoons.

This rare Prudent classical flute is extremely responsive with a rich and very flexible sound. It has wonderful attack and good intonation, playing at the pitch of a=428 Hz. It would be the perfect companion for hours of Delusse or other French classical music.
