Horn – GEBR. ALEXANDER
Here we have a lovely [French] horn by Gebr. Alexander in Mainz. The company was first established way back in 1782 as a small workshop by Franz Ambros ALEXANDER (1753-1802). When Franz Ambros died, the business was carried on by his widow Katherina, and the four sons, the brothers (Gebrüder) Claudius, Philipp, Martin and Kaspar Anton. Today Gebrüder Alexander is in the hands of the seventh generation of the family.
If we look at the stamp, we can assume that this particular horn was made between 1897, when the workshop was appointed Court makers to the Grand Duke of Hess, and the end of the First World War in 1918.
It is unusual as it is operated with the right hand. The rotary valves are beautifully decorated with a floral design. All the valves and slides work easily. It has a trumpet mouthpiece. There are some minor dents – please see photos. Overall, this E-flat horn is in very good working condition and was prized by its previous owner.
