Ring-key flageolet – THIBOUVILLE-LAMY, Jérôme
This Boehm-system, ring-key flageolet was made by the renowned company Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy & Cie or J.T.L. It was a large French musical instrument making company that was established in the mid-19th century. It resulted from the merger of several successful ateliers.
show more The company produced large numbers of stringed, woodwind and brass instruments. It even reached annual production rates of over 150,000 instruments produced by more than 1,000 skilled workers. A business was opened up in London in 1880. The entire J.T.L. company ceased business in 1969. This flageolet features every key you could possibly want (or maybe not!) – a total of 13! It demonstrates how a seemingly ‘simple’ instrument can evolve into something quite extravagant. Crafted from grenadilla, it boasts nickel silver keywork and a mother-of-pearl beak. The flageolet is in excellent condition. It was made around the year 1900. One nickel silver ring is missing. It plays smoothly, and the pads seal well, plus all the keys are functional. Its pitch is about a=435 Hz. It would require an overhaul to be suitable for professional performance again.
