Flute – LOT, Louis
This cocuswood flute was made by the master himself – Louis LOT (1807-96). By checking the serial number 1889, we can date this flute to 1874. All three sections of the instrument are stamped with the Louis Lot stamp, plus the serial number. This proves that the parts of the instrument all belong together.
Instruments by Louis Lot are highly regarded and very rare, especially if the embouchure or lip plate is unaltered. Furthermore, many of the instruments play either at a lower or sharper pitch than today’s a=442 Hz, making them not so desirable. In this case however; we are delighted to confirm that the embouchure is in its original form and the flute is playing at a=442 Hz.
It’s clear from the photos, that the flute was played a great deal – and obviously loved a lot too! Although it’s in need of restoration, it sounds bright and colourful with all the amazing characteristics of a 150-year-old Louis Lot wooden flute.
