Five-keyed boxwood flute – LEONHARDT
Here is a five-keyed flute by LEONHARDT. Some initial research has led us to a flute made by the same maker at the Michaelstein Abbey collection in Germany. A boxwood clarinet by Leonhardt with the same stamp was also recently sold at auction in the UK.
This instrument is crafted in boxwood, with brass keys and horn rings. We believe it was made during the first quarter of the nineteenth century in eastern Germany, possibly Saxony. This is because of the style in which it is made and certain features. The keys are square and the G-sharp key is on the right-hand joint. The wooden blocks for the keys have little profiles to form decorations. The F key tone hole is specially profiled out of the boxwood. These features are also found on later instruments by August and Heinrich GRENSER.
The flute plays in tune and nicely at a=440 Hz. The sound is warm and bright. It is in playing condition following restoration by its previous owner several years ago. It is an ideal flute for late Classical and early Romantic music.
