Romantic flute – GODFROY, Pierre
This splendid Romantic flute is in search of a new owner. Whether you’re an avid collector, a performer or both, this outstanding instrument is one you cannot afford to miss.
It’s representative of the five-keyed flutes that were en vogue for a long time in France. It was also the preferred model of many prestigious flutists. These flutes tended to be light and have small holes – their sound remarkably sweet.
show more The flute features D-sharp, short F, G-sharp, B-flat and C keys. The keys, along with the rings, are all made of solid silver. We can see various hallmarks on the keys. But that’s not all… the tuning slide and tenons are all expertly crafted in solid silver too. The flute is stamped with the maker’s mark. The head joint is not stamped, but the barrel bears the PG monogram. We believe the head joint was made for this instrument. The cap is beautifully decorated. This musical gem was made by one of the members of the illustrious GODFROY family – namely Pierre GODFROY (1780-1848). Pierre Godfroy jeune was the son of Clair I Godfroy (1750-1813) and younger brother of Clair II Godfroy aîné (1774-1841). He moved from La Couture to Paris around 1818 and would eventually become a fierce rival instrument maker to his brother. For more information on the Godfroy family, the book Great Flute Makers of France: The Lot and Godfroy Families, 1650-1900 – by Tula GIANNINI is well worth a read. So is Rene Pierre’s article “Un Godfroy Aîné Peut en Cacher un Autre: Les Godfroy de la Couture-Boussey” published in the magazine Larigot, number 70 from November 2022. The flute is in playing condition because it was overhauled by its previous owner. The crack in the barrel needs to be restored properly. Overall, the instrument is in very good condition. It is supplied in a period flute case which requires a nice new inlay. This Pierre Godfroy flute has a bright and colourful sound with great intonation. It plays at a pitch of a=435 Hz and by pulling out the tuning slide, we can even play at a=430 Hz. show less
