18th-century flute – SCHLEGEL, Jeremias
Let’s travel to Basel… to the eighteenth century and the family woodwind instrument workshop of the SCHLEGELs.
This eighteenth century flute was made by the musician and instrument maker, Jeremias SCHLEGEL (1730-1792) in around 1780. Jeremias was the son of Christian SCHLEGEL (1667-1746) and they both worked in Basel. In 1746 Christian died and Jeremias took over his father’s business at the young age of just 16.

This flute is stamped throughout with its maker’s mark, except for the “new” extra, middle joint. It is made of boxwood and has ivory rings and a beautiful ivory cap. The silver key is nicely shaped. The flute plays at a=440 Hz with its original middle joint. An extra middle joint was made for this flute so that its owner could also play it a a=415 Hz. Its round embouchure is masterfully cut.
A wonderful option for playing at a=440 Hz and a=415 Hz on an 18th century original instrument.
