Romantic oboe – LUDWIG & MARTINKA
This delightful Romantic oboe was made by the Prague-based masters Franz LUDWIG (1801-1882) and his son-in-law Josef MARTINKA (1831-1886).
It is crafted in grenadilla with nickel silver keys and rings.
The literature states that Ludwig was an apprentice at the CZERMAK workshop in Prague. Around 1830, he set up his own business.

Josef Martinka was the son of a publican and learnt the woodwind making trade under Josef Wenzel HORAK (1817-1903) in the same city. He married the daughter of Ludwig in 1855 and then joined Ludwig’s business in 1857. The Ludwig Martinka partnership lasted until Ludwig’s death in 1882. Martinka carried on the business with just his own name until he too passed away just four years later in 1886. We can therefore date this oboe to the time between 1857 and 1886.
This Ludwig & Martinka Romantic oboe showcases fantastic signature Viennese-style features.
