Description
Clarinet – CLAPISSON, Leonard
We have a true gem of a clarinet now on sale on VM Collectables. It was made around 1780 and before the French Revolution, after which the fleur-de-lys stamp was no longer used.
This C clarinet is crafted in beautiful, flamed boxwood, which has aged and now has a lovely honey colour. The brass keys mounted on blocks are square and very slender. Its ivory rings were expertly turned to produce delicate profiles.
show more We believe the mouthpiece is original to the instrument and is very fine and narrow. The horn ring on the barrel seems to be an early replacement. The instrument was restored by its previous owner. It has new windings, pads, and corks. It is therefore in very good condition. Yet the mouthpiece is stuck in the barrel. Little is known about our Léonard CLAPISSON. He was born in 1749 in Lyon, France where he died at the young age of 47 in 1797. This could help to explain why there are so few of his instruments known to exist. We do know some details about his descendants. Léonard Clapisson married a certain Henriette PARENT in 1775. One of his children was the composer and horn player Antoine Clapisson (1779-1857). He was also the grandfather of the lyric composer and collector of old instruments Louis Clapisson (1808-1866). Louis Clapisson’s collection was bought by the French state in 1861 and can still be visited in Paris. A superb eighteenth-century clarinet perfect for a clarinet collection! Important note This instrument contains ivory. A certificate for the legal sale of this instrument within the European Union is supplied when purchased. show less
