Description
Ocarina – Freyer & Co Missnia 10
This ocarina was made by the company Freyer & Co, perhaps around the turn of the 19th century or maybe even earlier. It is made of white clay with a black glaze. We can see the FREYER CO stamp and the word MISSNIA. This is the latinisation of the name of the city where the company was located – MEISSEN and was a brand name. There’s a fabulous article in German about ocarina-making in the city of Meissen that is also downloadable here. We can see that it uses the same numbering system of Heinrich Fiehn and other ocarina makers.
Its size makes this a rare find. It is an F-ocarina listed in advertising as number 10 and despite its age, we can see that it’s in very good condition.
