Piccolo – HUEBER, Johann Georg
This extremely light, boxwood piccolo certainly looks like it has had an interesting life. It was made around the beginning of the nineteenth century. The maker’s stamp was difficult to decipher. We think it was made by Johann Georg HUEBER or HUBER (1790-1863). He was a turner and instrument maker located in Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany. He trained with his father Joseph Huber for four years before spending ten years in Munich, Vienna, Frankfurt, Dresden and Augsburg as a journeyman. He initially had problems getting a licence to make instruments in the city of Augsburg, so worked out of the village of Lechhausen nearby where his father had his business before moving to Augsburg again.

The wooden key mount was broken off (see photos) and shows early repairs performed using brass and shellac. It has a nicely cut embouchure and still plays at a pitch of a=437 hz with a sweet, warm sound. show less
