This rare set of three books “Die Drehleier. Ihr Bau und ihre Geschichte”, translated as The Hurdy-Gurdy: Its Construction and History by the German musicologist Marianne Bröcker is widely considered the absolute “bible” and standard reference work for the instrument. Marianne Bröcker (1936–2013) was an eminent German musicologist, ethnomusicologist and anthropologist.
The books were published in 1973/1977 by Verlag für Systematische Musikwissenschaft.
Volume 1 (Textband) contains comprehensive text detailing the structural evolution and historical timeline of the instrument from the Middle Ages onwards.
Volume 2 (Bild- und Registerband) is dedicated entirely to index data and 331 highly detailed illustrations and architectural schematics of various historical models.
Third volume (Nachtragsband or supplement volume) features newly uncovered historical research, technical builders’ updates and structural materials gathered after the initial publication
These three books are in good condition – see photos. The name of the original owner is blocked out in black.
This set is an absolute must for hurdy gurdy professionals and enthusiasts who read German, with its 861 pages… and over two kilos!
