Flute – BILTON, Richard
What gorgeous figured boxwood! It was of course very specially selected, turned and finished to the delight of its then new owner.
This lovely flute was made by the Englishman Richard John BILTON (1792-1870). Bilton had previously worked for John Cramer and his successors before setting up on his own in 1826. He worked out of the address 93, Westminster Bridge Rd until around 1856. It seems that Richard never married, but lived with parents until they died and then with his spinster sisters. At one stage, he employed at least four workers.
The flute is stamped with the mark of the unicorn too – just like those by Cramer and other makers. It features a nicely scalloped flat plate brass key. It is in great condition and plays nicely at a pitch of a=445 Hz. Its sound is bright and firm.
