Bass ophicleide – A.G. GUICHARD
This bass ophicleide was made perhaps around 1840 in Paris by the August G. GUICHARD workshop. This important maker would very much influence the development of brass instruments. Hand-made as well as mass-produced brasswinds were produced. Guichard even patented an ophicleide with valves known as the “Ophicléide à piston” – a sort of early form of the tuba.
It is known that the company was founded in 1827 and at one point employed over 200 workers before the founder August G. Guichard died in 1845. The business was left in the capable hands of Pierre Luis GAUTROT (Guichard’s brother-in-law and former apprentice) and was later bought by COUESNON.
So here we have a lovely top-end bass ophicleide with nine keys. It’s a 9-foot, B-flat instrument that is in very good condition. The photos show there are minor dents at the hand rest and some cracks in the bell. Thankfully all the keys are present and are padded with leather. It may be that some are the original leather pads.
It’s a finely made piece of brass history!
