Description

Méthode de Flûte – TULOU, Jean-Louis

The flute treatise of Jean-Louis TULOU (1786-1865).

Tulou was a flute teacher, player and instrument maker. He started studying at the Paris Conservatoire at the young age of 10 and went on to be professor there from 1829 to 1856. He was an extremely successful and dominant figure on the French flute scene, performing and composing many works for the flute.

It is thought that the first edition of Méthode de Flûte was published in Paris in 1835. It teaches the keyed flute and one key is added at a time through etudes, short pieces and exercises. The second edition was published by the company Schonenberger, in business from 1830 to 1875. In 1875, the publishing house HENRY LEMOINE & Cie bought the whole Schonenberger catalogue. It moved to 17 rue Pigalle (where it remained until the 2000s) in 1877 and opened a branch in Brussels in 1885 which closed in 1958.

The Schonenberger plate number was 2745 and Henry Lemoine & Cie added its 16842 HL number to the publication. This number can help us to date the publication to around 1893-1894.

It is in good condition with very old and more recent repairs.

The book contains some lovely illustrations, including fingerings, and is all in French of course!
