Description
Oboe – Rudall Carte & Co Ltd
This oboe was made by Rudall, Carte & Co Ltd. The company was set up in 1872 as successors to Rudall Rose, Carte & Co. Later in 1943-1944, it was acquired by Boosey & Hawkes.
Rudall Carte & Co didn’t make many oboes at the turn of the century as the company was obviously specialised and successful in flute manufacture. This is therefore a rare instrument. There is one in the Edinburgh collection, serial number 1024, dated to 1919. This oboe was made in earlier… in 1899 to be exact.
It is made of cocuswood with nickel silver keywork and goes down to B-flat. It has a thumbplate system.
In terms of condition, there is a crack at bell where the socket is located and also at the lower/right-hand joint at the socket. The right-hand lever connection to the trill key is broken. Otherwise, the instrument is in good shape but needs a well-deserved restoration.
