18th century ivory flute
Wow! What we have here is an ivory flute made around 1740, perhaps in England. The flute is beautifully made and features a solid-silver key. The profiles are very finely and masterfully turned and demonstrate superior craftmanship. The embouchure is small and round and in perfect, original condition. The key is also special – the spring under the key is fitted directly into the ivory. This flute is in superb condition. There is an old repair to the foot socket since there was a crack under the key. Apart from, there are no cracks visible, even not in the inside.
The flute plays at a pitch of around a=418 Hz. Therefore, it could be played at ‘modern’ baroque pitch of a=415 Hz if the middle joint is pulled out 3-4 mm.
