1916 WW1 conductor’s baton
This two-part 1916 World War One conductor’s baton looks fantastic, doesn’t it? It is crafted in sleek ebony which has been further varnished black. The hallmarked solid sterling silver mounts are beautifully engraved and are still very crisp. It is stored in a delightful, compact red-velvet lined case. The two parts are screwed together to obtain a 400 mm long baton weighing just 55 grammes.
show more But let’s not stop there since this beautiful item and its markings open up the past in such an amazing way. It bears the hallmarks for Sterling silver, London and 1916 as well as the maker E.N for Ebenezer Newman & Co. Operating as a company mid-1880s, it advertised as stick makers – which meant it made decorated walking sticks with silver, gold, bone or ivory mountings. The company also made gold and silver mounted umbrella sticks, whips, novelty sticks as well as conductor’s sticks. The engraving “7TH E.Y.R.” tells us that this was presented or belonged to a member of the 7th East Yorkshire Regiment. The 7th (Service) Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment was formed in September 1914 at the city of Beverley in East Yorkshire, England. It was part of K2 – meaning the second wave of Kitchener’s New Army. This was a group of volunteer soldiers recruited for the British Army in World War I. On 14.07.1915, the division was mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne in France engaging in many actions until the end of the war. show less
