Nestler music staves ruler
Just when you thought you’d seen everything, we’re back to show you you’re wrong. On sale now is a unique music accessory. It’s a ruler you can use to drawer music staves – and pretty quickly too. We’ve never seen anything like it!
It was made by the Black Forest based company NESTLER, founded way back in 1878 by Albert Nestler (1851-1901). The company were specialists in slide rulers. There were hundreds of different types and models which can be seen here. The firm made it through the First World War. It suffered extreme damage towards the end of the Second World War through air raids and was continued by generations until it finally ceased production, one hundred years later in 1978.
This novel instrument was perhaps made after the Second World War. It seems to be made of nickel silver with a varnished finish. The ruler is moved by the two wheels at the back. The ruler slides over the paper with a little wheel located at the centre. If we press the button down, the ruler moves downwards a defined distance. This distance can be regulated by another little wheel.
This music staves ruler is supplied in its original case and was perhaps made for the French or Swiss market. The company did export to over 60 countries worldwide. Maybe this was a presentation piece or even a prototype. What we do know is that its new owner can produce rows and rows of lines in a moment, ready for that long-awaited composition.
