Description
Ivory flute – CAHUSAC
This magnificent ivory flute was made by the Cahusac family, one of London’s most iconic instrument makers. It was perhaps made around 1770.
It is a very early flute, maybe by Thomas Cahusac Senior himself, in the typical style of flutes by Thomas Stanesby, but with a different head joint construction. It is made in four parts, with beautiful and elegant silver rings. The silver key is inlaid. Its screw cork and cap are original and also crafted in ivory.
show more Its dainty embouchure is almost round and very, very small. It measures just 8.1 mm x 8.6 mm. The flute appears very slender and elegant. In terms of condition, there is a repaired and restored crack underneath the key channel. This can be seen from inside the socket (see photo). There are typical small cracks inside the right-hand joint socket and the head joint. The hairline cracks that can be seen on the head joint are also quite the norm for ivory. They develop from the inside. If this flute should be played for long, intense periods, it is necessary to at least line the head joint with a modern protection fluid. This ivory flute produces a bright, shiny, refined, and elegant sound. The pitch is approximately a=440 Hz. This flute made of ivory by Cahusac is nearly 250 years old and still has an amazing sound. A certificate for the legal sale of this instrument within the European Union is supplied when purchased. show less
