Oil painting – Mezzetino serenading with a little girl

A delightful oil painting of Mezzetino playing a guitar alongside a little girl. Mezzetino was a comedy character, like Harlequin, but dressed differently. The character was first introduced in 1683 by the Théâtre Italian de Paris actor Angelo Costantini. It seems that Constantini had such an expressive face that he could portray the role without a mask.

The famous French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was attracted by this Mezzetino character and it featured in several of his works including ‘Mezzetino’, painted between 1717 and 1720.

This take on Mezzetino is from the 19th century…probably painted in England. Our Mezzetino is focused on perhaps serenading with his guitar. A little girl, dressed in Victorian clothing, is playing at his feet.
