This beautifully illustrated hardback book covers the entire spectrum of American musical instruments, encompassing folk, popular, and elite varieties. It provides a comprehensive overview of the industry from colonial times right up to the 1980s. It also offers a cultural and social history within that framework and serves as a catalogue for the collection housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Laurence Libin is the editor-in-chief of the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments. Additionally, he is the emeritus curator of musical instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, an honorary curator for Steinway & Sons, and a former president of the Organ Historical Society.
The book was published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2012 and contains 224 pages. The text is accompanied by over 300 illustrations, with some in full colour.
