Description
Mysterious ebony flute with ivory key
Have you ever seen a flute with an ivory key other than one in a museum behind glass? We hadn’t before this one came into our hands. It is crafted in ebony and has five ivory rings and a single ivory key.
There are no markings on the flute but its style is reminiscent of flutes from the 1820 period. It was skilfully made from fine wood and ivory rings.
Overall, it’s in good shape, though there are some small cracks. One is in the tenon of the middle joint and another on the lower part of the head joint. The windings may possibility be original.
This delightful ebony flute plays at roughly a=450 Hz. Who made it? That’s anyone’s guess! But we can be sure it was made for someone quite special.
