Description
Baritone – MAHILLON, C
This baritone was made by C. MAHILLON in Brussels. The company was founded in 1836 by Charles Borroméee Mahillon (1813-1887). It would become one of the main Belgian makers of wind instruments in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The company produced percussion instruments too and was a major supplier to armies. It remained a successful family business with operations in London and Brussels, until 1932, when it was sold to J. A. Smits. Woodwind production ended three years later in 1935.
This seems to be a Dutch army baritone. It features the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. There are three crowned lions and the words “JE MAINTENDRAI”. This coat of arms was used from 1815 until 1907 when it was replaced.
It’s a special instrument in that it has four (3+1) perinet valves. It was recently restored with two new slides. All the slides move and the valves appear to be working.
