New book – Innovative woodwind instruments by the Heckel family/Innovative Holzblasinstrumente der Heckelfamilie – JOPPIG, Gunther

If you ever wanted to know more about the HECKEL family of instrument makers, then this is the perfect book for you. Not only that, but it’s bilingual – English and German. [Bravo to the translator!]

Published in 2014, this book is packed full with over 300 illustrations. Gunther JOPPIG was in contact with the company owners for over 50 years. During this time, he compiled his special collection of Heckel instruments. A total of 77 of these exhibits are shown and described in this book. Ever heard of the Heckelphone-clarinet? Perhaps the Heckel musette? It’s all inside these 195 pages. But we’ll let the book speak for itself:

‘Wilhelm Heckel GmbH is a family business, which was founded in 1831 in the town of Biebrich on the Rhine by Johann Adam Heckel from Adorf, and still exists today. From the very beginning, the business focused on the making of bassoons incorporating the modifications by Carl Almenräder. This catalogue, which accompanies a special exhibition organised by the Musikinstrumenten-Museum Markneukirchen, provides insights into the development of woodwind instruments in the 19th and 20th centuries, as illustrated by this dynasty of instrument makers, who made a significant contribution to the development of bassoons and contrabassoons and invented the heckelphone.’
