Ivory flute – CAHUSAC, Junior

This is your chance to own a magnificent ivory flute from the Cahusac family, one of London’s most iconic instrument makers. It was made by Thomas Cahusac Junior, maybe around 1780.

Take a moment to look at the exquisite patina and lustre of the original ivory. The solid silver key is seamlessly integrated into the foot joint, resembling an inlay. The key cup has been shaped to match the flute’s radius, similar to early English flutes crafted by makers like Stanesby. This flute features notably thin walls, characteristic of ivory instruments. The embouchure is oval, measuring 8.8 mm by 10.2 mm. It looks like the cap might have been repaired around the time it was made or a little later.

Playing this flute is a delightful experience, producing a wonderfully sweet sound. It has a pitch of a=440 Hz and offers excellent intonation. The fork fingerings, like F-natural, are simple to manage.

The instrument appears to be in its original form with no alterations. The middle joint does not look like it has been changed or shortened at all.

On the reverse of the head joint is a scratch which looks worse than it actually is. It ends in a little hole which does not reach into the bore. We don’t know how this happened, but it does not affect the playing quality of the instrument. It is a just an optical issue, and part of the flute’s long history. The screw cap was at some point restored as was the top of the head joint where a ring was inserted to stabilise the only visible crack of this flute that has a length of 7 mm.

This delightful ivory flute has been cleaned and checked, and it now boasts new tenon thread. But wait, there’s more… while we were cleaning, we made an incredible discovery – the maker of the silver key. Under the spring, we found the initials I.H., which are believed to belong to John HALE, an instrument maker who was active in London from 1785 to 1804 and produced keys for his colleagues.

Nestled in a period wooden case, this ivory flute is poised for a revival and eagerly awaits a new owner to take it home.
