Silver flute – LEFÈVRE, Martial / BUFFET CRAMPON

We’re delighted to unveil this beautiful solid silver flute made by the maître Martial LEFÈVRE (1883-1957). He worked from 1928-1939 for Mlle. Gabrielle Chambille as the last workshop master of the Louis Esprit LOT (1807-96) company before it was purchased in 1952 by SML Strasser-Marigaux. During his time there, he made some of the company’s finest flutes, for some of the best players of the time, including Bopp, Blanquart, Gilbert, Rampal, Scheck and many others.

It is understood that during his time at Buffet Crampon, he made less than 20 flutes – here we have one of them! This flute was made in the forties. The solid silver has French hallmarks; the springs are crafted in gold. It is constructed inline with open holes, closed G-sharp and C-foot. The tone-holes are masterfully soldered.

The level of craftsmanship is astonishing – meticulous, precise yet delicate. We can see this in the pointed arms of the keys, which are so straight and sharply made. Every part of this flute is just oozing French flute tradition and elegance. We could say that it is made in the style of a Louis Lot flute…but perhaps a cut above!

In terms of condition, this instrument is in great shape. The cup of the F-key has a slight dent. The rest looks almost like Martial himself just finished making it! The surface of the tube is also in lovely condition. We can see that it wasn’t used much – maybe just admired from afar. As an example, the tone-hole chimneys look almost new with their sharp and precise edges.

We would recommend a pad rechange to play this instrument in a professional setting. But even with its current pads, it exudes potential. The scale is somewhat modern – providing for better intonation. It’s easy to play E3 and all the high notes are brilliant and direct. The low notes are stable and round, with a very warm and colourful tone. It has a characteristically French sound throughout.

It is easy to play the flute at modern pitch – a=442 Hz or even slightly higher. In other words, a flute made in the great French tradition… for a modern player.

Only superlatives can describe the craftsmanship if this unique and rare Martial Lefèvre flute – other than definitely recherchée for every flute connoisseur.
