Description
Ring-key piccolo – Barbier, Florentine
This ring-key piccolo is crafted in grenadilla, featuring nickel silver keywork. Florentine BARBIER (1828-1909) was born in Paris and worked initially as a key maker. He went on to make flutes, starting his own workshop in 1870 according to his own advertisements. He was an innovative instrument maker who worked on several patents. One such patent in 1869 was for a “cylindrical-rectangular flute”. He also participated in the Paris exhibitions, including the 1889 exhibition, with his “système Barbier” piccolo. He worked for Couesnon & Cie between 1885-1898 and was independent again before being taken over by H. Selmer in around 1910.
Supplied in its original case, this Barbier piccolo has a pitch of around a=437 Hz. It has a typical hairline crack at the bottom of the head joint where the metal is inserted into the wood. Other than that, it is in nice condition overall, but obviously needs an overhaul.
This ring-key piccolo is a lovely example of Florentin Barbier’s work – instruments distinguished by their outstanding quality and innovative ideas.
