Romantic flute – Viennese style – ZIEGLER

Listen to this flute playing an excerpt from Fantasia on Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco by Cesare CIARDI (1818-1877).

This Viennese-style Romantic flute was made by the Johann ZIEGLER (1794/5-1858) workshop. It is made of three parts in grenadilla and features solid silver keys and rings. Built in Ziegler style with pewter plugs in the final bottom four keys, it features and ivory head joint and a tuning slide.

The flute goes down to B-flat and has a special lever for D-sharp for the left thumb. The instrument plays at a=448 if the tuning slide is fully inserted. We can achieve a=440 Hz by pulling out to between the second and third line on the tuning slide. Pulling out further by 1 line, gives us a=435 Hz. But lower pitches are not possible.

True to Ziegler tradition, this instrument swaps the usual long right-index C key for a short left-hand one. It also comes with a blank nameplate on the barrel, completely ready for its new owner’s name! It is supplied in its original case.

The flute was restored by its previous owner and plays very nicely. A crack on the reverse side of the ivory head joint and on the tuning slide barrel were successfully repaired. However, it needs some keywork adjustment to be played professionally again.
