Six-keyed cocuswood flute – MONZANI, Tebaldo
This marvellous very early flute stamped 1811 was made by the Italian-born English gentleman and entrepreneur Tebaldo MONZANI. It is one of the earliest Monzani instruments we’ve seen. It was fully restored and now not only looks amazing but sounds beautiful. Why not hear for yourself? Sit back and enjoy Charles Nicholson’s “Within a mile of Edinburgh town” (Scottish tune in Preceptive lessons for the flute).
show more Monzani’s flutes are known for several unique characteristics and this one is no exception. The flute has a reverse tenon at the head joint. The keys flaps are also quite fascinating. They are flat with a fixed protruding threaded screw. Over this, a perforated flat pad is incorporated, which is fixed in place by a silver button (patent 1807). The word PATENT is stamped on the wood. These pads were relatively quieter than the pewter variants and were meant to improve the instrument’s sound quality. Plus, it also incorporates the combined lower middle and foot joint. The flute is stamped on all parts with the maker’s mark. It was made in 1811 and has the serial number 186. It is crafted in expertly selected cocuswood – with a wonderful grain. It has a C-sharp foot joint. The six solid silver keys have the typical Monzani crown stamps. The specially designed silver rings simply gleam. The embouchure is masterfully cut with the highest precision measuring 8.8 x 9.7 mm. This Monzani flute was fully restored. It was fully cleaned. The original silver rings were loose and were refitted. The flute was equipped with a new head cork, new pads (silicon) and windings. Some of the original pads and tenon thread were kept to give to the flute’s future owner. This instrument really deserved a new case to keep it safe for many years to come. A handcrafted walnut case was created specifically for this flute. The flute plays incredibly well at around a=438 Hz to a=440 Hz. Its tone is dark and it oozes character. With its superb intonation and effortless playability in every register, this Monzani flute is truly extraordinary. It is a remarkable testament to the exceptionally high quality of English flute craftsmanship from over two centuries ago. show less
