Bb-flat tuba – VOGELWEITH, Aimé

This Alsatian B-flat tuba was perhaps made around 1930 by the maker Aimé VOGELWEITH (1878-1942). As we can see by the maker’s stamp, he took over the HUG branch in Strasbourg, France.

The origins of the HUG music business  go back to 1791 in Zurich. One member of the family business, Emil Hug (1842–1909) took over the reins of the company in 1862. One of the company’s expansions included a branch he established in Strasbourg in 1871. It lasted until around 1921 when it was taken over by Aimé VOGELWEITH (1878-1942). Vogelweith had taken over the Carl or Charles RINKEL (1878-1924) workshop, previously owned by Julius Max BÜRGER.

This remarkable tuba has been cherished in a collection and well-maintained. It appears to have journeyed around the globe with a former soldier from the French Foreign Legion. All the slides and valves function perfectly, with just minimal dents—please refer to the pictures. Its previous owner, a collector, had it restored, so it’s in fantastic condition.

This magnificent tuba has travelled far and wide. It’s now searching for a new place to call home and the chance to begin a new adventure.
