Early Romantic flute – STREITWOLF

This beautiful and fully restored Early Romantic flute was made at the STREITWOLF workshop in Göttingen, Germany, around 1830. Johann Heinrich Gottlieb STREITWOLF (1779-1837) was a formidable woodwind instrument maker, teacher, composer and inventor.

Hear it now playing Caspar KUMMER (1795–1870) – Study No. 13 in F-sharp major from 24 Etudes mélodiques.

This four-part boxwood flute with C-foot features seven brass keys and ivory rings and cap with screw cork. If we look at the photos, we can immediately see just how oval and broad the embouchure was made. It measures 8.4 x 11.4 mm! The exquisitely crafted ivory ferrules or rings have two thin and elegant profiles. The keys are also quite a surprise, since they are different shapes – oval and round. The flute is equipped with an F-key and a long F lever. The keys are held in wooden blocks with brass pins. These wooden blocks are further supported by brass pins/nails which are fixed into the wood. This was typical of clarinet makers of the time. The keys are easy to handle and feel great to the touch. Another remarkable feature, which is not common among other makers, is that the holes for A, F-sharp, and E are drilled at an angle.

The foot joint is really very conical and the foot bore finishes very narrowly, with a diameter of merely 9.4 mm. And yes, there is a correction hole to tune the low C.

The flute was entirely restored. Everything is present and original. There are no cracks. The restorer replaced the pads with silicon ones.

In terms of playing condition, the flute plays very easily and speaks wonderfully, especially in the high register. Its intonation is outstanding, making it capable of playing in even the most difficult keys. The low notes are also surprisingly very strong and perfectly in tune. This magnificent Streitwolf flute plays at around a=440 Hz.
