Hunting horn – HENRY KEAT & SONS
This curved hunting horn was made by the company Henry Keat & Sons. The company was founded in around 1825 in London by Samuel Keat and specialised in making brass and copper instruments. The company stayed in family hands until it was purchased by another concern in 1984.
It was especially renowned in the initial period for its keyed bugles, early cornets and post and coach horns. The company mainly supplied the trade including other makers such as Key and D’Almaine.
Thousands of handmade instruments were made for every imaginable purpose. It is reported in the Langwill Index that by 1894, the company had a total output of 50,000 bugles for government and military purposes, 25,000 horns for coaching and other road purposes, 80,000 horns for hunting, in addition to 60,000 bugles and 20,000 smaller horns for cycling and club use.
Where they all are now is anyone’s guess! 🤔
This particular handmade hunting horn is unusual in that it is not straight but curved. It was made sometime after 1866 when the company located to the stamp’s address of 105 and 103 Matthias Rd. London N.
