Conical ring-key flute – WAGMÜLLER, Alfons
We’re back with another conical ring-key flute. This time it was made by Alfons WAGMÜLLER. Little is known about this maker. It is thought that he was born in 1904 and is listed until at least 1979 as a master woodwind instrument maker in Munich.
show more What we do know is that he learnt his skills under the watchful eye of the master Joseph/Josef PÖSCHL (1866-1947). On 15 October 1938, the German magazine Zeitschrift für Instrumentenbau, published that the Munich Musical Instrument Makers’ Guild had confirmed that Alfons Wagmüller had passed his master craftsman’s examination. He then started up his own workshop. This is an open G-sharp flute with converted thumb key. It has a C foot. It is equipped with a thumb rest holder… but the thumb rest is missing. The flute is crafted in grenadilla with nickel silver keywork and rings. In terms of condition, there are two cracks at the socket of the head joint, around 60 mm long. There is a crack in the middle joint from the top and another on the reverse of the key mechanism. The pads are sadly not sealing. If restored, we expect this flute to play at around a=440 Hz. This conical ring-key flute is based on Boehm’s design, but built much later. It’s a great example of an instrument made by the last of the famous line of Munich-based woodwind instrument makers. show less
