Military fife – MOLLENHAUER, Conrad
We have a rare and coveted item for sale. It’s a German World War One regimental fife. This fife was made by the Conrad MOLLENHAUER (1876-1943) workshop.
show more The MOLLENHAUER legacy began with Johann Andreas MOLLENHAUER (1798-1871). His early life and training as an instrument maker is contained in his “Wanderbuch” or journeyman’s record book. Conrad Mollenhauer was his grandson and after presumably training in the family he worked as a journeyman with RITTERSHAUSEN in Berlin and D. ADLER in Marchneukirchen. Then he set up on his own in 1912. This C fife is made of what looks to be grenadilla wood. The ferrules are nickel silver. It has six regular tone holes, normally found on earlier fifes, and a seventh elevated hole for the right little finger or pinky finger. This is a semi-tone hole. The cylindrical leather-lined, leather-covered carrying case with its hinged brass lid, brass decoration and brass base is fantastic. It even comes with a leather belt loop. It’s an interesting item for collectors of fifes or indeed military memorabilia. show less
