Description
Silver flute – Rudall Carte & Co Ltd.
This flute was entirely handmade in solid silver by Rudall, Carte & Co Ltd – England’s finest flute-makers of the mid-twentieth century. The company was set up in 1872 as successors to Rudall Rose, Carte & Co. Later in 1943-1944, it was acquired by Boosey & Hawkes. For more details on this fascinating company, we recommend reading Robert Bigio’s fine work on the subject.
show more This C-foot flute has French, open-hole keys, drawn tone holes, offset closed G-sharp and G keys with gold springs. The key cups are nicely shallow and give the flute its delicate style. The silver is hallmarked throughout. We can see a number of hallmarks for silver purity which help us identify the place of origin and date of the silver itself. They include the lion passant for sterling silver, a tiger’s head as the London town mark and the small letter “e”. The sterling silver can be dated to the year 1960. The key mechanism feels very comfortable and sits nicely in the hands and the keys can be played with great homogeneity. Pitched at a=442 Hz, the sound is powerful, round and warm – rather to be expected from a fine English flute indeed! show less
