Description
Helicon – CERUTTI Giovan Battista
This valved bass brass instrument is called a helicon. The helicon is part of the tuba family and was invented in Vienna in 1845 by Ignaz STOWASSER (1811–1892). The instrument boasts a spiral circular form that enables the bell to sit on the player’s left shoulder, making it relatively simple to carry in military bands, whether marching or on horseback, as it was originally designed. [Sounds simple… doesn’t it?]
show more Giovan Battista CERUTTI was active in Turin during the mid-1800s, specialising in the creation and repair of brass and woodwind instruments. Learning more about him and his family is quite challenging, as there were more than 300 individuals named Giovan Battista Cerutti living in Turin at that time, and fires have destroyed all the business records at the Chamber of Commerce. However, it is known that his sons joined him in the business, which earned accolades and secured military contracts. The workshop gained a reputation for producing high-quality instruments. This helicon is in pretty good shape. The three rotary valves are functioning, but the slides could use a little loosening. You can spot a few minor dents in the pictures. It comes with a mouthpiece. show less
