Who hasn’t heard of the famous flute tutor, Méthode de Flûte by Hugot and Wunderlich, published in 1804? It was recognised as the official treatise of the Paris Conservatoire, replacing François Devienne’s Nouvelle méthode théorique et pratique pour la flûte, which had previously been used in teaching at the institute.

Antoine HUGOT (1761–1803) was one of the five flute instructors. He was appointed as the flute professor at the Conservatoire in 1795 and taught the first class. He was the principal contributor to the treatise. Johann Georg WUNDERLICH (1775–1819) was appointed professor of the second class in 1795. He succeeded Hugot as the sole flute professor following Hugot’s death and the subsequent reorganisation of the Conservatoire in 1803. The treatise is written for the four-keyed flute.
